Start with the place
Carpenter Valley sits north of Truckee, beyond Alder Creek Road, and it feels tucked away from the regular pace of town. The area is known for open meadow, creek habitat, and a quieter side of the Truckee trail map.
Lower Carpenter Valley is managed with conservation in mind. For 2026, access to the Land Trust property is closed while forest health work takes place, so treat this guide as future planning until the valley reopens.
Before you roll
- Area: Truckee / Carpenter Valley.
- Level: Easy.
- Distance: 5 mi out and back.
Average time: 1-1.5 hrs.
View: Carpenter Valley.
2026 note: The road is closed for forest work. Check the Land Trust before you go.
- Dogs: Leave dogs at home.
Access note
Save Carpenter Valley Trail for when access reopens. The road is closed for 2026 under a Forest Service order, so check the Land Trust before you plan, post, or head out.
This is still a good ride to keep on your list. When it is open, it is one of the calmer Truckee-area rides, with meadow views, creek edges, and a slower pace that fits the place.
How the ride feels when open
Carpenter Valley is not a speed ride. It is a look-around ride. The trail moves through open valley land, wide bridges, and soft views that are best enjoyed at an easy pace.
Stay on the built trail and boardwalks. Meadow ground can hold water long after town looks dry, and one bad line can leave a mark for a long time.
Finding your way
Access is off Alder Creek Road by way of Carpenter Valley Road. When open, the ride starts from the parking area at the end of the dirt road.
Follow the out-and-back trail. Use the optional loop only when it is open, dry, and clearly allowed.
Ride with care
Stay on trail. Do not cut corners, ride through meadow grass, or push across wet sections.
Go slow, stay dry, and leave dogs at home.
Keep it local
Keep the California 89 Bike Cards handy for days when Carpenter Valley is closed or too soft to ride. Pick a dry, open trail now, and save this one for when access is clear.
Good trail days start with knowing when not to ride, too.
