Start with the place
Hole in the Ground is a high-country ride near Soda Springs and Castle Peak, close to Donner Summit and the I-80 corridor. The area sits higher than Truckee, so snow, storms, and cool wind can linger here when lower trails are already dry.
The route starts near Castle Peak and finishes toward Soda Springs, which is why shuttle planning matters. This is not the kind of trail zone where you want to figure out the ending after a long day on the bike.
Before you roll
- Area: Truckee / Soda Springs.
- Level: Hard.
- Ride style: Point to point with high-country trail and shuttle needs.
- Start: Castle Peak Trailhead after setting a car at Sherritt Lane.
- Best for: Advanced riders who are ready for remote terrain.
Add-on: Lola Montez Lake is a short side trip near the end.
How the ride feels
Hole in the Ground is a real high-country ride. The name has a little drama, but the route earns it with rock, slabs, views, and a remote feel that asks you to be prepared.
There is no easy exit if the day goes sideways. Treat this like a backcountry ride, even if you know the area well.
Finding your way
Leave a car on Sherritt Lane at Soda Springs. Drive to the Castle Peak Trailhead on the north side of I-80.
Pedal up Castle Valley fire road for about a mile, then turn left onto Hole in the Ground. Near the end, use signs, respect land signs, and stay on the legal route.
Lola Montez Lake can be a short side trip near the end if the group has time and energy.
Who this ride is for
This ride is for advanced riders who can fix a flat, ride rock, manage a shuttle, and handle a long day without relying on cell service.
Ride with a buddy. Start early. Bring more than the bare minimum.
Keep it local
This is exactly why the California 89 Bike Cards belong in the car: quick route notes, smart planning, and a reminder to pack like the trail matters.
