Start with the place
Mr. Toad's is a South Lake Tahoe classic reached from the forested terrain above Meyers and the South Shore. The route ties into the Armstrong Pass and Tahoe Rim Trail area before dropping onto Saxon Creek Trail.
South Lake riding has its own feel: bigger pine forest, more granite, and long descents that can carry speed. That is part of why this ride has its reputation, and also why weather, route choice, and trail rules need a real check before you go.
Before you roll
- Area: South Lake Tahoe.
- Level: Hard.
- Ride style: Long climb, high point, and technical descent.
- Start: Fountain Place Road trailhead off Oneidas Street.
- Best for: Advanced riders with strong descending skills.
- Pets: Not a good fit for this route.
How the ride feels
Mr. Toad's Wild Ride feels big from start to finish. The climb takes patience, and the descent asks for skill all the way down.
It may be a South Lake classic, but it is not a casual lap. Go in prepared, ride with people who understand the route, and keep something in reserve for the descent.
Finding your way
Climb Fountain Place Road. Cross the bridge and climb Armstrong Trail to the pass.
Continue up the Tahoe Rim Trail to the high point. Descend the TRT, turn right onto Saxon Creek Trail, and stay focused through the rough sections all the way down.
If it is your first time, ride with someone who knows the route or study the map closely before you go.
Who this ride is for
Ride this when your group can handle rocks, speed, long climbs, and changing weather.
Start early, bring more food and water than you think you need, and leave pets at home.
Keep it local
Use the California 89 Bike Card for the route overview, then do the deeper check this ride deserves: weather, rules, water, food, tools, and the group you are riding with.
California 89 has mountain-ready pieces for South Lake days that start with a climb and end dusty, tired, and happy.
