A walk through Donner Summit history
The Donner Tunnels are not a typical forest hike. They sit on Donner Summit, near the old rail corridor, and give you a close look at one of the most distinct historic places above Truckee.
You get dark tunnel sections, painted walls, open pass views, and a strong sense of how much history runs through this stretch of the Sierra.

What the route feels like
This is more walk than wilderness trail, but it still feels like an adventure. The tunnels were built in the 1860s for the Central Pacific Railroad and were used for more than a century.
Expect shade, uneven ground, damp spots, art, and big views when you step back into the light.
Finding the route
Access is near Donner Summit. Confirm where to park and avoid active rail areas.
Bring a light for the tunnels. Snow, ice, and runoff can make the route slick even when Truckee feels dry.
Good day for
Choose Donner Tunnels for history, photography, and a different kind of Truckee outing. It is best when you want something more textured than a standard trail.
Before you head out
Check access and conditions before you go. Wear shoes that can handle wet or uneven ground.
Respect the area, do not enter unsafe or active rail spaces, and pack out what you bring in.

Stop by California 89 before or after for a warm layer. Donner Summit can feel cooler than town, even on clear days.
