A short Emerald Bay hike with a lot going on
Eagle Lake sits above Emerald Bay, reached from the Eagle Falls area on the South Lake side. It is one of those hikes where you get granite steps, waterfall sound, Desolation Wilderness feel, and a lake stop in under two miles.
Because the reward comes fast, the trail gets busy. Go early and keep the day patient.

What the trail feels like

It is a good first taste of Desolation Wilderness if your group wants something scenic without a full backcountry day.
Finding the trail
Start near the Eagle Falls area above Emerald Bay. Parking is limited and fills early.
At the fork, take the trail to the right for Eagle Lake. Check permit needs before entering Desolation Wilderness.
Good day for
Choose Eagle Lake for waterfalls, granite, a lake stop, and a short moderate hike near Emerald Bay. It is best when you want a lot of Tahoe in a compact route.
Before you head out
Check parking, weather, and trail conditions before you leave. This area is popular for a reason, and the lots can fill before the day feels busy elsewhere.
Bring water, wear shoes that handle granite, and give other hikers room on narrow sections.
