A steady climb from Alpine Meadows
Five Lakes starts from the Alpine Meadows side of Olympic Valley and climbs toward a small group of alpine lakes. The route sits close to North Lake, but it feels like a step into higher country once you start gaining elevation.
This is a favorite for a reason: steady switchbacks, sun, views, and cool water at the top if the season is right.

What the trail feels like

Near the lakes, move carefully and stay on durable ground. The area is beautiful because people treat it with care.
Finding the trail
Access is from the Alpine Meadows area. Parking is limited in busy months.
Start early, bring a map, and check rules before entering wilderness land.
Good day for
Choose Five Lakes for a half-day North Lake hike, alpine lake scenery, summer swims, and a steady climb that feels worth it.
Before you head out
Check weather, trail status, parking, and wilderness rules before you go. The trail can be hot on the climb and crowded near the lakes.
Bring water, snacks, sun protection, and patience for other hikers.
