A short South Lake hike that climbs fast
Granite Lake and Maggie's Peaks start from the Bayview side above Emerald Bay, one of the prettiest and busiest corners of the South Lake area. The trail gets into granite, lake views, and Desolation Wilderness terrain quickly.
This is a short hike by mileage, but not by effort. The climb starts right away, and the upper sections ask you to pay attention.

What the trail feels like
Granite Lake makes a good pause before the harder push toward Maggie's Peaks. It is the kind of spot where lunch makes sense if your group wants to keep the day simple.
Beyond the lake, the route gets steeper and less obvious in places. Keep your map out and move carefully.
Finding the trail
From Tahoe City, take Highway 89 south to Bayview Campground. Drive to the end of the campground and park near the Bayview Trailhead.
Near the peak, the trail can fade. Stay with your group, watch your footing, and do not push past the route you can follow safely.
Good day for
Choose this hike for a short, steep South Lake day with a lake stop and big granite scenery. It is best for hikers who are ready for hard climbing in a compact route.
Before you head out
Check parking, trail status, weather, and any Desolation Wilderness permit needs before you go. Bayview can get busy early.
Bring water, sun protection, and a layer. Granite reflects heat, and weather can still move fast above the lake.
Make it a California 89 day
Bring the California 89 Hike Cards when you want the day to stay clear: trail, distance, gain, and what to expect.
Before or after the hike, stop by California 89 for hats, layers, and everyday gear that works from trailhead to town.
