Mount Lola Trail: A California 89 Hike Guide

North of Truckee, the day gets quieter

Mount Lola sits north of Truckee, out past the busier Tahoe routes and closer to the Sierraville and Independence Lake side of the map. The drive alone makes the hike feel a little more removed from town.

At 9,143 feet, the summit gives you a big look across the northern Sierra. On a clear day, the views can stretch toward Mount Lassen, Castle Peak, and the Sierra Buttes.

What the hike feels like

Mount Lola is a real summit day. The trail climbs through lush ground, creek crossings, wildflowers, and snowmelt falls when the season lines up.

It feels less polished than some of the Tahoe classics, in a good way. You come here for space, quiet, and a long steady climb.

Finding the trail

From Truckee, take Highway 89 north. Turn left onto Bear Valley Road, then left onto Jackson Meadows Road. Follow Independence Lake Road and the signed dirt roads toward the trailhead.

Road names can be easy to miss, and dirt road conditions can vary. Save your route before you leave town.
