One of Tahoe's big summit days
Mount Tallac is one of the South Lake hikes people talk about for a reason. The mountain rises above Fallen Leaf Lake and the southwest side of the Tahoe Basin, with views that open wider the higher you climb.
This is not a casual morning walk. It is long, steep, exposed in places, and very worth it when your group is ready for a full summit day.
Quick hike notes
- Area: South Lake Tahoe.
- Level: Hard.
- Route: 10.5 mi (Out and Back).
- Time: About 6 hrs 30 mins.
- Gain: 3,274 ft.
- Views: One of the most amazing panoramas of the Lake Tahoe Basin.
- Pets: Pets Allowed.
- Best for: summit seekers, iconic Tahoe views, hard South Lake hikes.
What the climb feels like
The trail gains more than 3,000 feet and keeps asking for steady effort. You get views of Fallen Leaf Lake, Lake Tahoe, and Desolation Wilderness along the way.
The top can feel colder and windier than the trailhead, even on a warm day. That is part of Tallac.
Finding the trail
From Tahoe City, take Highway 89 south to Mount Tallac Road. Turn right and follow the road about one mile to the trailhead.
Stop at the self-serve booth for a wilderness permit before you hike. Start early, since the climb is long and the lot can fill.
Good day for
Choose Mount Tallac for an iconic Tahoe summit and one of the best wide views in the basin. It is best for strong hikers who are ready to earn the top.
Before you head out
Check weather, snow, trail conditions, and permit details before you go. Do not count on the summit feeling like town.
Bring plenty of water, food, sun protection, and a warm layer. Turn around if weather starts building.
Make it a California 89 day
The California 89 Hike Cards help keep the big hikes simple at the start: route, time, gain, and a quick gut check before you go.
After Tallac, stop by California 89 for a clean layer or a hat that feels better than whatever has been in your pack all day.
