A steep West Shore morning
Rubicon Peak sits above the Meeks Bay side of the West Shore, where the lake feels close but the climb gets serious fast. This is the kind of hike you pick when you want a short route that still makes your legs pay attention.
The trail climbs more than 2,000 feet in about two miles. That is the whole story here: steady work on the way up, big Lake Tahoe views when you earn them.

What the climb asks for
Rubicon Peak is short on paper, but it climbs like a real summit hike. There is not much warm-up before the grade starts doing its job.
The payoff is a wide look over Lake Tahoe and the West Shore. Sunrise can be beautiful here if your group is comfortable starting early.
Finding the trail
From Highway 89 near Meeks Bay, turn onto Scenic Drive. Continue toward Highland Drive and follow the road toward the dirt parking area near the trailhead.
If you start before first light, bring a headlamp and know the route before you leave the car. This is not the hike to figure out from scratch in the dark.
Good day for
Choose this hike for a short, steep summit day. It works best for strong hikers who want hard effort, lake views, and a West Shore start.
Before you head out
Check the road, weather, and trail before you go. The route is exposed enough that heat, wind, and afternoon weather can change the feel of the day.
Bring more water than the mileage makes you think you need. A short hike can still be a hard hike.
Make it a California 89 day
Use the California 89 Hike Cards when you want the simple facts close by: distance, gain, route type, and what kind of day you are getting into.
After the climb, head back toward Tahoe City or Truckee for a dry layer, a hat, or something easy to wear off the trail.
