A full day on the crest
This is not a casual walk between two ski areas. The route from the Sugar Bowl area to Palisades Tahoe follows high Sierra terrain, linking Donner Summit country with Olympic Valley by way of long miles, big gain, and open ridge views.
It is the kind of hike you plan before you talk yourself into it. Once you are out there, the day feels wide, exposed, and very much like the Sierra.

What the trail asks for
Expect a full day: 18.7 miles, nearly 5,000 feet of gain, and a point-to-point finish. Anderson Peak, Tinkers Knob, and Donner Crest are part of the reward, but there is a lot of work between views.
This hike is best when your group is strong, prepared, and comfortable with long trail time.
Finding the trail
From Donner Lake, take Old Highway 40 west toward Sugar Bowl and the Mount Judah area. Follow signs to the PCT and Donner Peak trailhead.
The hike ends near Olympic Village Inn at Palisades Tahoe. Set your ride, shuttle, or pickup before you start. Do not leave that part for later.
Good day for
Choose this route for a true Sierra day, PCT mileage, and high-country views. It is best for experienced hikers who know how to manage time, food, water, and point-to-point logistics.
Before you head out
Check trail status, snow, weather, and shuttle details before you go. This route crosses high terrain where conditions can change quickly.
Start early, carry layers, and bring enough food and water for a long day with no easy bailout.
Make it a California 89 day
Keep the California 89 Hike Cards handy for the planning stage and the trailhead check. They help keep the day clear before the miles get big.
After a hike like this, the best stop is the simple one: a clean layer, a good hat, and something easy for the ride home.
